Ashton Creek Project

Description of the Project

This Project involves the installation of two 500 kilovolt (kV), 250 megavolt-ampere reactive (MVAR) switched shunt capacitor banks at the Ashton Creek Substation to support generation expansion in the Columbia River system, including the addition of Revelstoke Unit 5 and maintain the reliability of the system in the region. These will be the first 500 kV switched shunt capacitor banks installed on the BC transmission system.

The new equipment to be added will require an expansion of the existing substation fence. It is expected that the expanded area will be contained within the property owned by BC Hydro for the existing substation and that no additional land will be required.

This project was included in the Capital Plan and has been approved by the BC Utilities Commission.
