Electricity demand on central Vancouver Island is increasing. As a result, parts of the regional transmission system, specifically the transmission lines that serve the area between Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach, are at capacity and are even overloaded under certain conditions. In order to provide a continued, reliable supply of electricity to this rapidly growing region, BC Hydro has identified the need to increase the capacity of the central Vancouver Island transmission system by October 2010.
BC Hydro is building a new double-circuit 230 kilovolt transmission line that will tap into existing transmission lines approximately 12 kilometres inland and connect to a new substation south of Nanaimo. The Project will help ensure that the communities of this region have a safe, secure and reliable supply of power well into the future.
